Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray and Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason today announced details of an 18-month investigation that led to indictments against 41 people and four companies. The defendants are alleged to have engaged in real estate transactions to purchase 453 homes with fraudulent loans totaling $44 million. The indictments are the result of work done by the Cuyahoga County Mortgage Fraud Task Force operating under the authority of the Ohio Organized Crime Investigations Commission. Carrington Mortgage Being Sued
The state of Ohio has filed a lawsuit alleging Carrington Mortgage Services LLC breached its agreement to offer “reasonable” loan modifications to eligible borrowers.
The state and Carrington entered a pact in January 2008 to resolve a dispute arising from the state’s New Century Financial Corp. litigation, requiring the company to engage in “good faith” negotiations to help New Century borrowers avoid foreclosure. Judge Taking over Condos
The Related Group, already facing financial problems at several projects and foreclosure on CityPlace South Tower locally, may have to pay $7 million for alleged construction defects at the oceanfront Beach Club in Hallandale Beach before disbursing proceeds from its last three units there. The Beach Club master association last week asked Broward Circuit Judge Ronald Rothschild to take jurisdiction of the three units through a writ of attachment. A hearing is scheduled for Friday.
